What are the alternatives to PFAS in food packaging?

Bagasse is a sustainable and rapidly renewable material with a low carbon footprint. The material is well-suited for food packaging, but requires grease- and water-repellent properties to prevent oily or moist food from leaking through. Through extensive research, we have developed a grease- and water-repellent barrier that makes our packaging leak-proof – without added PFAS.

What are the PFAS regulations for food packaging in Europe?

PFAS bans are currently being tightened at a rapid pace. Denmark has already introduced a ban on PFAS in paper- and cardboard-based food contact materials. At the EU level, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) has introduced a restriction on PFAS in food contact packaging, and in parallel, ECHA is evaluating a broad REACH proposal to restrict PFAS in the EU/EEA.

What are the PPWR concentration limits for PFAS in food packaging?

Since 12 August 2026, PPWR sets specific concentration limits for PFAS in food-contact packaging. Packaging cannot be placed on the EU market if it contains PFAS at or above: * 25 ppb for any individual PFAS measured through targeted PFAS analysis (excluding polymeric PFAS from quantification) * 250 ppb for the sum of PFAS measured through targeted PFAS analysis, where applicable with prior degradation of precursors (excluding polymeric PFAS from quantification) * 50 ppm for PFAS overall, including polymeric PFAS If total fluorine exceeds 50 mg/kg, evidence may also be required to show the amount of fluorine originating from PFAS or non-PFAS substances. These concentration limits apply specifically to food-contact packaging and form part of PPWR’s wider requirements for packaging and packaging waste across the EU.
